LE24: Top 5 Reasons to Run

Imperial College Union
Wednesday 14 February 2024 10:15

The Leadership Elections 2024 are well underway at Imperial College Union and we’re here to tell you all about it.

What actually are the Leadership Elections?

The Leadership Elections are an annual democratic exercise in which all students at Imperial College London can nominate themselves and vote to choose their main student leaders for the academic year ahead.

Students will elect...

So, why should you consider running for a position? Well, keep on reading – we’ve listed our top 5 reasons below!

1. You really can make a difference.

Imperial is an amazing place to study with incredible people, facilities, and opportunities. But nothing is perfect. Whether you want to influence the Learning & Teaching Strategy, make sure mental and physical health is at the heart of everything the Union does, or support our clubs and societies to reach their full potential – you can make a huge impact. Whatever your motivation, running for a position in the Leadership Elections gives you the chance to shape what happens next at Imperial.

2. Meet and work with the best of the best.

You’ll be part of a community buzzing with energy and passion, eager to implement change and improve the student experience. Not only will you develop your teamwork and people skills, but you’ll make friends for life!

3. Have an experience like no other.

Entering the working world is a daunting experience. However, both the paid and voluntary roles we have on offer will be sure to set you up with the skills and experience you will need to enter any type of employment. A grad scheme at a big firm might seem like the natural next step – but being an elected officer allows you to gain the kind of organisational leadership experience most wait years to get.

Any student from any year of study can take on the role of an Officer Trustee – you don’t need to wait until your final year to put yourself forward! All of our roles allow you to develop relationships with senior stakeholders at both the College and Union as well as giving you the chance to act as the voice to over 20,000 students.

4. Hone your skills and develop new ones.

As an Officer or volunteer, you will receive lots of training and support to enable you to do your best work. From financial training to wellbeing training, stakeholder management, and training on how to run or lead a campaign, very few people across the country will experience the kind of development opportunities that candidates and elected officers do!

5. Our Officer Trustees get paid.

You’ll get paid around £37,000 for the year, 25 days paid holiday, plus bank holidays, extra time off at Christmas and Easter, contributions to your pension PLUS all the invaluable training we’ve already mentioned offered throughout the year! Our voluntary positions also provide a wealth of experience and knowledge that will strengthen both your personal and professional development.

Sound like a bit of you? Nominate yourself now!

Nominations close at 12:00 on Friday March 1.
