Influencing the College's Learning & Teaching Strategy and speaking up for students about feedback, coursework and supervision quality, the Deputy President (Education) is at the centre of the Academic Representation Network. These Reps are responsible for Imperial College Union's policies and campaigns in academic matters - lobbying for higher standards and innovative methods through our Responses, Student Choice Awards, and membership of key teaching committees and working groups across all Faculties.

What you would learn as Deputy President (Education)

Being Deputy President (Education) will develop your skills in leadership, policy-making and influencing others as you operate at the highest levels of a globally-recognised institution. You will be supported as you distil the opinions of students into an agenda for change, and empowered to use that agenda to make real and lasting differences to the quality of learning, teaching and research supervision. Throughout you will learn how to constructively challenge views held by others and manage and embed change across a large and complex organisation, while meeting students and academics from every discipline taught at Imperial.

As Deputy President (Education), you would develop your:

  • Leadership ability, supporting 400+ Academic Representatives to have a real impact on their departments and on College's educational quality
  • Strategic thinking, as you press the College to implement their Learning & Teaching Strategy and help Imperial College Union speak up for all of its members
  • Interpersonal and public speaking skills, working with senior College decision-makers, Union staff and student volunteers
  • Policy development skills, as you navigate and influence complex debates such as the Teaching Excellence Framework, feedback and misconduct policies to the benefit of students
  • Stakeholder management, as you balance the competing views and interests within the student body and the wider Imperial community

Role Description

The Deputy President (Education) shall:

  • Take on Presidential duties as appropriate
  • Be responsible for reporting student opinion on academic affairs to the College, suggesting areas for development and enhancing the student experience and provision for students, in conjunction with the relevant Union committees
  • Be responsible for the training, support and recognition of a Representation Network for the Academic Representatives of the Constituent Unions, in conjunction with the relevant Union committees and staff
  • Liaise with the Constituent Unions on all academic matters concerning students
  • Support student and staff-led educational innovation within the College

All Officer Trustees shall:

  • Act as a Trustee ex-officio
  • Fulfill all Presidential and constitutional responsibilities
  • Execute and develop policy and further the aims and objectives of the Union
  • Ensure that all members of the Union are equally represented
  • Chair relevant Union committees
  • Liaise with Union and College staff as appropriate
  • Represent the Union on external committees as appropriate
  • Report to Union committees as appropriate
  • Establish extra duties with the President where appropriate
  • Coordinate the work of the non-Trustee officers of the Union
  • Deliver the Union's strategic aims and uphold the Union's values
  • Ensure that the Union provides relevant and sustainable events and services that meet the demands of its members
  • Campaign where appropriate on issues relevant to the membership
