Leading the development of a Wellbeing Strategy, supporting the work of our Liberation & Community Officers and putting mental and physical health at the heart of the Union and the College's strategy, the Deputy President (Welfare) leads the new Wellbeing Representation Network. They are responsible for Imperial College Union's campaigning and lobbying on wellbeing issues - covering everything from sexual health to consent, race attainment gaps to improving bursaries, advice provision to helping students fight stress - and more. 

The Deputy President (Welfare)'s achievements this year

The current Deputy President (Welfare) is Fintan O'Connor, a Chemical Engineering Undergraduate who was previously CGCU Welfare Officer and Year One Academic Representative. His main projects this year are leading College to generate a Wellbeing Strategy, implementing the lessons learnt from our Liberation Review, and ensuring the Wellbeing Representation Network has a successful first year of operation.

What you would learn as Deputy President (Welfare)

Taking up the role of Deputy President (Welfare) will give you leadership, empathy and influencing skills available in no other graduate role.

You will be supported and encouraged to address the deep root causes of the problems our students face, and to think about how College's culture and student experience should develop and grow. You will challenge - and work in partnership with - a wide range of College student support services and external organisations in the process. Throughout, you'll gain insights into the diverse lives and backgrounds of our members.

As Deputy President (Welfare), you would develop your:

  • Leadership ability, supporting  networks of almost 100 Wellbeing Representatives, Liberation & Community Officers and student campaigners to change the world around them 
  • Strategic thinking, as you raise student wellbeing to the top of College's agenda and decision-making
  • Interpersonal and public speaking skills, working with senior College decision-makers, Union staff and student volunteers
  • Ability to develop policy based on people's lived experiences, as you hear the stories of what our members have lived through and tackle the root causes of their problems
  • Stakeholder management, as you balance the competing views and interests within the student body and the wider Imperial community

Role Description

The Deputy President (Welfare) shall:

  • Take on Presidential duties as appropriate
  • Be responsible for reporting student opinion on liberation and welfare issues to the College and external bodies, suggesting areas for development and enhancing the support provision for students, in conjunction with the relevant Union committees
  • Be responsible for representing the welfare needs of all students, especially minority or underrepresented groups, to the College
  • Be responsible for the training, support and recognition of a Representation Network for the Wellbeing Representatives of the Constituent Unions, in conjunction with the relevant Union committees and staff
  • Be responsible for overseeing the support to student led campaigns

All Officer Trustees shall:

  • Act as a Trustee ex-officio
  • Fulfill all Presidential and constitutional responsibilities
  • Execute and develop policy and further the aims and objectives of the Union
  • Ensure that all members of the Union are equally represented
  • Chair relevant Union committees
  • Liaise with Union and College staff as appropriate
  • Represent the Union on external committees as appropriate
  • Report to Union committees as appropriate
  • Establish extra duties with the President where appropriate
  • Coordinate the work of the non-Trustee officers of the Union
  • Deliver the Union's strategic aims and uphold the Union's values
  • Ensure that the Union provides relevant and sustainable events and services that meet the demands of its members
  • Campaign where appropriate on issues relevant to the membership
