Hi everyone, Camille here. I’ve been your Students’ Union President over the last academic year and I am delighted to have been re-elected for a second term for 2024-2025!
As we head into a new academic year, I want to let you know about an exciting project that we’re kicking off this summer to make your students’ union better at representing you and your views - our Democracy Review!
Jumping right into the deep end as the President of a multi-million pounds organisation as my first ever full-time job is not something I have ever expected. The role and the sudden responsibilities put on my shoulders are nothing short of challenging, and the learning curve has felt more like a rocket launch rather than the gentle hike that I may have liked more. But as with all rocket launches, a frame that can withstand unpredictability is required.
Having reached an unusual end to an unusual term, capping off an unusual year – I have been given the very usual task of reflecting on how things have gone, and what I am looking forward to next term.
The student voice was clear – with 2503 students voting, 1791 said that the Union should support the College’s staff who are striking in defence of their pensions. This is a binding result, and the Union now formally supports the strike action.
"This is a contentious issue which will potentially affect all students in the College, and which all students may have a view on. It is only right that wide student consultation should be integral to the Union’s formulation of a decision."
Graduation is a profoundly meaningful part of the student journey at Imperial College. Walking across the stage at the Royal Albert Hall is an unforgettable experience, and one of the many lesser tragedies of the Covid-19 pandemic has been the loss of this experience for those students graduating over the last year.
