We're starting our first talk of the year off with a bang! Our much anticipated guest speaker, ROBERT TOMBS, Professor Emeritus of French history at the University of Cambridge, will be giving a talk on “L'Année Terrible and its consequences for France and Europe”. Tombs has written over 10 major books and articles, including the bestselling "The English and their History", awarded the 'book of the year' title by many newspapers and more recently, a new book "The Sovereign Isle". Tombs' specialty is 19th-century France, particularly the Paris Commune. His work focuses on the political culture of the working classes, and has led him to revise a number of myths associated with the history of the Commune. His first book, "The War Against Paris, 1871" analysed the role of the French army in the suppression of the Paris Commune.
