Undermind; Your Mind Matters (Depression, Stress & Anxiety)

Thursday 26 January 2017 18:00 - 21:00
Lecture Theatre TBC, Imperial College London
Guest Lecture | Islamic
In contrast to 'physical illness', mental illness is nowhere near as well researched or understood, but it is just as real and we are all susceptible to it. The social stigma and discrimination attached to mental illness due to this lack of understanding, can worsen someone's mental health, deter them from getting treatment and affect their recovery. 9 out of 10 people with a mental illness say that this precise issue has a negative effect on their lives. Imagine yourself or a loved one suffering in silence due to the fear of being labelled and stereotypically profiled? Did you know that 1 in 4 people experience a mental illness in any given year? Sadly, this is brushed under the rug in our community and leads many to lead a life in isolation. Without a doubt, recognition and support can go very far in helping ourselves, and our loved ones recover from mental illness. We are honoured to be bringing you, two, highly esteemed speakers to talk about matters of the mind, because your mind, matters. *Dr Zakia Akhteruzzaman covering stress and anxiety, how they can be managed in oneself as well as identified in others.* *Brother Sultan Hatab delivering, his heartwarming personal experience of a mental illness, plus interactive scenarios individuals are often faced with and how YOU can try and save a life.* Come join us on Thursday 26th of January, 5:30pm, location TBC. Refreshments will be provided as usual. Facebook Event Page https://www.facebook.com/events/1777235922601251/
