Membership of Imperial College Union is split into three categories: Members, Associate Members and Life Members.
All registered students of Imperial College - full time, part time, undergraduates and postgraduates are automatically Members of Imperial College Union. Only Members are entitled to participate in the government of the Union for example standing to be a Officer Trustee or voting in elections.
Students who are over 18 and are studying at other Higher Education institutions around the world may become Associate Members of Imperial College Union. Being an Associate Member entitles you to use the Union's facilities such as the bars and nightclubs, as well as join a Club, Society or Project . Staff and Alumni of Imperial College are also entitled to become Associate Members of the Union, though Alumni may only opt to be lifetime Associate Members.
Lifetime Associate Membership can be purchased online for £40 by anyone who has been a Member for at least one year, or Associate Member for at least two years.
Associate Membership also entitles you to use the Union's facilities such as the bars and nightclubs, as well as join a Club, Society or Project; it does not entitle you to participate in the government of the Union such as voting or standing in any election.
An Associate Membership can be purchased for £5 per month from the Union Reception, situated on level 2.
After you leave Imperial you can still remain part of the Union by becoming a Life Member. For a Life Membership fee of £40, you will be able to use the Union and its facilities, and attend events with up to two guests, only paying the special student rate. As a Life Member, you can continue to meet your friends at the campus bars in South Kensington and at Charing Cross.
You can also join a Club, Society or Project, and you will be welcome at sporting events and other Club & Society events such as musical productions or film showings as well as major yearly events such as the annual International Night and the Summer Ball.
Joining Clubs, Societies & Projects
As a member of the Union you may join any of the Clubs, Societies or Projects , most will charge a fee for this and some may have a different fee for Life and Associate members as they do for Imperial College students. You should join a Club, Society or Project online - you will need to log into the website and be a Life or Associate member to do this.
If you are a current student or staff member at Imperial College or have left within the past year you will have an Imperial College login and password, use this to log into the site to purchase Life Membership. The system will record you as a Life Member within about an hour. If you no longer have an operating Imperial College login or password then create a login to purchase your Life Membership, the system will take about three working days to record your Life Membership correctly.
To link your membership details to your website account, go to your account settings and use the 'Update Membership' function to enter your membership details.
Please note that only current students from Imperial can participate in BUCS sports matches against other institutions.
