Over the past two months, we have been working in response to the series of legal and societal challenges restricting the rights of Trans+ people.
We are committed to supporting our Trans+ student community. In collaboration with Imperial, we have voiced our support to renew the Stonewall membership.
A Union Council paper has been submitted detailing a series of actions, focusing on the expansion and improvement of gender-neutral facilities on campus to ensure that all students feel welcomed. We have also met with the Imperial's Associate Provosts for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) to voice our concerns.
University Management Board was presented survey responses collected by our LGBTQ+ Officer and i600 on how our community is affected by the Supreme Court ruling.
We will be responding to The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) consultation, on its code of practice for services, public functions and associations. The consultation is being run in response to the decision made by the Supreme Court. If you’d like to feed into this consultation, please fill out this form.
We are disappointed by the UK Supreme Court ruling on Wednesday, 16 April 2025, regarding the definition of ‘sex’ in the Equality Act 2010, which we believe is an unfortunate decision that poses a major setback to improving Trans+ welfare.
We would like to make it clear that we fully support our Trans+ community, and we are committed to upholding our values of inclusivity and community during these challenging times. We stand firm with our Trans+ community. Transgender, non-binary and intersex people are valid and will always be.
We recognise the impact this ruling might bring to the Trans+ community and how it may lead to feelings of stress, uncertainty or confusion. Please remember that you’re not facing this alone, and there’s support available in the Union and the University:
- Union Advice Centre
- Student Counselling and Mental Health Advice Service
- Your Faculty and Departmental Wellbeing Advice Services
- If you experience or see harassment you can use the Report and Support Tool to disclose information about what has happened and ask to be contacted by one of our confidential, specialist Student Support Advisers.
