PhD Supervision Town Hall

♿️ Accessibility information

Online meeting via Teams.

We're inviting you to a Town Hall on PhD supervision, hosted by PhD student campaigners and supported by Imperial College Union.

Why are we holding this?

We know that supervision experiences at Imperial vary enormously. Some students have strong, supportive relationships with their supervisors, but others have felt unclear about expectations, unsure of their rights, or uncertain about where to turn when things go wrong. Research conducted right here at Imperial backs this up, and we think it's time for students to come together, share their experiences, and push for meaningful change.

What are we campaigning for?

We want to work with you to seek improvements to Imperial's supervision policies, including:

  • Stronger accountability for supervisors, particularly in cases where behaviour falls outside the Mutual Expectations Document or College policies
  • Mandatory and regular supervisory training
  • A complaints procedure that students actually feel safe using, one that is timely, objective, and fair

What is the Town Hall?

This is a closed space for PhD students only. It is an opportunity to connect, share experiences, and organise collectively. By the end of the session, you will have:

  • Met other PhD students who may have faced similar experiences to your own
  • Understood the method we are using to drive change on supervision at Imperial
  • Left with clear actions to help our group grow and ensure we are better informed about the experiences of students in our community
