Take a seat at the table with senior members of Imperial College London and the Union President, and apply to be the second student member of the Imperial Council.

The Council is the governing body of Imperial and is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, finance and governance of the institution. They hold the most senior leadership of the university to account, and scrutinise everything from finances, to the estate, to the strategic direction of the university.

In addition to the Imperial College Union President (who is an ex officio member), Imperial’s University Council has a second student member, who is nominated by ICU Board of Trustees and then formally appointed by the University Council.

The Second Student Member helps provide a complementary or additional student perspective alongside the Union President during meetings of the Council.

If you have a passion for representing the student body and a keen interest in how Imperial runs, we want to hear from you!

This role is available to current Imperial students who will be as enrolled as an Imperial student or an ICU sabbatical officer in Academic Year 2026/27.

This is a voluntary role and there are 5 Council meetings per year.

  • Your understanding of [the role of] University Council and the role of the Second Student Member as part of it.
  • Why you believe yourself to be the best candidate to hold this position on behalf of the student body and the Union
  • Why you would like to put yourself forward for this role and what you would hope to learn/what skills or experience you would endeavour to develop
