Socialism or Extinction: Marxism & Ecology
The climate is collapsing.
The summer of 2026 was the hottest in UK recorded history. We've also seen five heatwaves this summer with thousands of heat-related deaths, and 80% of England still remains in drought. Horrifying floods in Nepal killed thousands of people earlier this year.
There are indications of a 'super El Niño' which would have devastating effects on the global food supply. 1 million climate refugees are expected by 2050.
Despite more than 30 COP conferences, phasing out fossil fuels never made it to the final text. The Labour government recently gave the go ahead for gas field production at Jackdaw, throwing net zero climate targets out the window. Planned AI data centres drain our water resources and destroy surrounding ecosystems.
The fight is on our doorstep. It is interwoven with questions of racism, imperialism and the rise of the far right. How do we channel despair and apathy from the poly-crises of today into action? What can we learn from the global climate strike in 2019? What sort of movement do we need going forward?
