Have you joined these fake Facebook groups?

As the next academic year becomes ever closer, fake Facebook groups and events start appearing for Imperial College Freshers. There aren’t made by us or the College, and you could lose money by joining them.

Other people, who aren’t part of Imperial College London, or Imperial College Union will create there groups. The problem with these groups is threefold. First, they’re only interested in making money from these groups. Promoters want to sell tickets to overpriced events – go to the same club on any other night, and you’d get the same experience for much less. These events won’t have many Imperial students going to them, and they’re usually quite a bit more effort to get to. It’s not worth it.

Second, they will use misleading language to make them sound legitimate and pursaude you to register with them and give away your personal details; in some cases they will even offer prizes with no guarantee that these actually exist and could be fake. The danger here is that they could use your details for malicious purposes, or sell these details to third party organisations who will spam you with advertising.

Third, they’re not here to help. We’ve got your back at Imperial College Union. If you’ve got a question, a worry, or a comment, we’re here for you. We can point you in the right direction, offer advice from our Advice Centre, and campaign for issues that are important to you. These other groups haven’t got your interests at heart – we have.

We’ve found these fake groups and events already. Don’t get caught out.

You can join our the Official group run by the Union here:
