Who Are the TUM JazzBand?

Based at the Technical University of Munich, the TUM JazzBand is a vibrant, student-run big band that brings together musicians from universities all across Munich. With their own talented vocalists and a sound that stretches far beyond traditional swing, they perform everything from high-energy funk and iconic film tunes to contemporary jazz and original arrangements. You can catch them not only at their own concerts but also lighting up TUM events and student festivals throughout the year.

The band’s story began when a handful of passionate musicians answered their initiator’s call and started rehearsing together. Fueled by that same enthusiasm, the group quickly grew and gave its first performance at a fundraising event. Since 2014, the TUM JazzBand has been organized as TUM JazzBand e.V. — entirely self-managed and driven by student initiative. Today, the ensemble numbers around 25 musicians and is conducted by Korbinian Bauer, a student at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich and a former member of the Landes-Jugendjazzorchester Bayern.

And they don’t stop there. Each semester, the band dedicates an entire weekend to intensive rehearsals, invites professional musicians for workshop sessions, and connects with other student big bands from across Europe. Their first international tour took them to Edinburgh in the autumn of 2018 — the beginning of many exciting collaborations across Europe.
