Who Are the IC Big Band?

The Imperial College Big Band is the official big band of Imperial College London, showcasing the university’s most talented musicians.

Under the direction of Chris Dean — one of the UK’s leading big band directors and the head of the Syd Lawrence Orchestra — the band has gained a national reputation for its outstanding musical quality.

Renowned for their fun and diverse repertoire, the band performs everything from big band classics to funk and fusion, making them the first choice for events both within and beyond Imperial College. With an impressive history of private invitations and performances, their music keeps audiences coming back for more.

The IC Big Band regularly plays at some of the UK’s most prestigious jazz venues, including:

Who Are the Durham University Big Band?

The Durham University Big Band (DUBB) is the university’s flagship, auditioned 18-piece jazz ensemble — a vibrant, diverse group that has been swinging since 1998. Known for tackling challenging repertoire, DUBB performs everything from newly commissioned works and premieres, to reimagined jazz standards.

DUBB has appeared at major events including Durham Jazz Fest at Dunelm House , and regularly collaborates with leading professional jazz musicians through workshops and masterclasses. The band is an active part of the UK student jazz scene, performing both locally and on national trips, and is recognised for its ambitious programming and high-calibre musicians.

With a tradition of excellence and a commitment to musical growth, the Durham University Big Band continues to showcase some of the finest emerging jazz talent in the country.
