Hey - I'm Matt
As Deputy President (Finance & Services), I help make the social life at Imperial one of the best in the UK through our bars, events and balls. I also work to ensure that our shops and services are top-quality, and I work with Tom - the Deputy President (Clubs & Societies) - to make sure our Clubs, Societies & Projects are adequately funded, trained, kept safe, and recognised for their incredible achievements.
I wanted to be Deputy President (Finance & Services) because I spent a lot of my time here involved in Union activities such as Rugby and the ACC Committee, and I wanted to play my part in keeping Imperial life fun and active. I also had a year of study in the Business School, which attracted me to the financial and organisational development responsibilities that this role would give me.
Every Officer Trustee sets several goals at the start of each year - goals they will work towards individually, and ones they will work on achieving collectively. These are the priorities I set for myself this year, as well as those I'll work on in partnership with the rest of the Officer Trustee team. You can get more information on each goal - and the progress I have made towards it so far - on my Officer Trustee Goals page.
You can also read my original Manifesto for when I ran for Deputy President (Finance & Services) here.
Everything Imperial College Union does is guided by Our Strategy 2017-20, launched in January 2017 after extensive consultation with our members and volunteers. Our Strategy sets out how we will transform the Imperial experience. For me as Deputy President (Finance & Services), Our Strategy gives me high-level aims such as ramping up our income from non-students, making sure our bars and shops serve the needs & wants of our members, and ensuring Imperial College Union remains a financially strong organisation.
I aim to pay attention to the Union's values as I work. Probably the most relevant one to me on a day-to-day basis is Leadership, as I speak up to ensure our members are at the heart of our planning as we prepare for big events and projects such as the Summer Ball or Welcome Week, and make complex decisions such as the tendering process for our bars or the software we use to process millions of pounds in income every year.
Good - that means you've recognised what it can do for your career. Imperial students are always on the lookout for graduate jobs in finance, organisational strategy and project management, and there's one on their doorstep. If you want to know more about being Deputy President (Finance & Services), then just get in touch, I'd be be happy to talk about my work and what my weeks are like. You can contact me via email and Twitter, and there will be opportunities to meet me and my fellow Officer Trustees and learn more about what we do throughout the Leadership Elections 2018.
Wondering how we're going to increase our funding for Clubs, Societies & Projects while keeping our bar & shop prices low? Interested in learning how a Summer Ball works? Strong opinions about house lager? Then come ask me, it's my job to answer your questions and represent your views.
You can get in touch with me in lots of ways - in person at an Imperial College Union event such as Union Council, by email, by Twitter or through the Imperial College Union Facebook page. You can also come to the Union Reception on the second floor of the Union Building. I'm not always available on short notice but perhaps another Officer Trustee or Imperial College Union staff member can help you.
