PG Reps: Chairing Meetings for Postgraduate Representatives

An appreciation of chairing skills is core to assisting student representatives in their roles. These skills, are all valuable for work or study, whether or not you are required to act as a chair, they include:

  • understanding the chairperson’s role
  • planning meetings effectively
  • creating an agreed agenda
  • understanding expectations, rules and roles
  • managing and involving people
  • collaborating to reach decisions
  • reviewing, minutes and following up on actions
This one hour workshop provides you with an overview of the above skills which contribute to successful meetings and chairing, as well as easy to apply tips and the chance to assess opportunities to develop the skills further in your roles. Throughout the course reps will have the opportunity to reflect on and discuss application of the skills into possible practice This course is recommended for all postgraduate representatives by Faculty SSC leads, it is credit bearing for doctoral researchers. Intended Learning Outcomes On completion of this workshop and with the post course materials, you should be better able to
  • Recognise the role of a chairperson
  • Outline five tips to chairing successfully
  • Identify how to chair a meeting to ensure representation
  • Apply chairing skills to your practice
  • Assess opportunities to enhance your chairing skills
