Join us in the Quad!
On Tuesday 30th January the whole College will be going centenary mad! Throughout the day we will be running a plethora of celebratory activity on the Queens Lawn and the Beit Quadrangle.
The Imperial College Big Band and the “Harmaphrodites” singers will perform in the Beit Quadrangle during lunchtime. Our very own juggling and skating teams will also be performing across the campus.
IC Radio will broadcast a live show from the Queens Lawn and they will be supported by displays from various clubs and societies. Special centenary events will be promoted and there will be the opportunity to ride Bo’ and Jez, our mascot vehicles.
The Royal College of Science Union will run tours up the Queens Tower throughout the day. These tours are open to everybody (in return for a small donation).
At 1pm in the Beit Quadrangle the Union will release 500 Balloons, cut the first slice of a large Centenary cake and then open up the newly refurbished foyer of the ground floor. Winter Pims, hotpot and tea will be on sale in the Beit Quadrangle, along with all the usual fayre in Da Vinci’s.
We will be running a Centenary Balloon Race and each of the 500 balloons we plan to release at 1pm will have a tag with a number and return address. The balloon that travels the furthest from the College wins!

To enter this competition, either find one of the Sabbatical Officers (in their offices or around the campus) or email Scott Heath. Entry costs £1 per balloon, and of course the more balloons you buy, the greater the chance you have of winning!
This event marks the start of an incredible year of centenary fun. Throughout this year the Union plans to run several major centenary events such a special University Challenge competition, a fashion show, International Night, Artsfest and Spring Music festival. The highlight of the Centenary will be marked on June 16th by the Imperial College Centenary Ball. Further information about the Union’s Centenary programme can be found from our special Centenary Website, which will be launched on January 30th. In the meantime, if you require further information about any Union Centenary Event, then please contact Scott Heath.
This event is kindly supported by STA Travel and the Imperial College Finance Society
