Policies of the advice centre

In order for us to run a professional service we have certain policies that are created to help the service run more efficeintly, below are some of these policies.

If you have any questions regarding how these policies affect you or the running of the advice centre please contact the student adviser Nigel Cooke

How your Information is stored

The Advice Centre is a totally confidential service in order for us to advise you effectively we need to take certain personal information from you for our own records but also to make it easier for us to contact you if we need to.

We will mainly ask you for a telephone number, your address, the course you are studying, your fee status, whether you are postgrad or undergrad and also what year you are in.
This information is stored confidentially on our database and no personal information is used for our stats i.e . names and addresses.

We may however use the other details to form reports to our members and also to college.

Successes

The Advice Centre works very hard for students and sometimes we get some really good successes which you can read about here:

  • Gas safety is a big part of housing law, we once won back a whole years rent for a student who was made ill by living in a property with a faulty boiler.
  • We often represent students' in appeals and hearings our advice can often help students build a case and get appeals upheld. We can act as an advocate
    for students in this position..
  • We have successfully appealed seven cases in the past year for PHD students who have been charged council tax.
  • We have managed to negotiate with Transport for London to avoid students being taking to court for fare evasion and other ticket offences on public transport.

These are just some of our successes it is hoped that in the future we will have student testimonials of their experience of The Advice Centre.

The Advice Centre is located on the second level mezzanine (2M) of the Union building.
