Mental Health 1We can almost guarantee that at least one person will tell you that you’ll have ‘the best time of your life' here at Imperial. This could well be true (and there are plenty of people who love it here so much that they end up never leaving), but at times it may not feel anything like the best time of your life.

Everybody experiences the ups and downs of daily life and we all have our own ways of dealing with them. Having said that, depression and anxiety are particularly common amongst students, and there are all sorts of theories as to why this happens.

If you find yourself having problems, the best thing you can do is ask for help. If you have a friend who is having difficulty coping, talk to them and see if you can help them sort it out (or find someone who can). There are lots of people within the Union and College that you can talk to including Nigel Cooke, the Union Advisor and the College Counselling Service, as well as your personal tutor and your friends.

Remember, most problems feel bigger than they actually are, and by talking to others you may be able to find a solution that works for you.

If you’re unwell and it’s causing you serious difficulty, there are many people who can help. All students can register with the Health Centre, which offers a wide range of services. Again, talk to your reps and your tutors if illness is starting to affect your study – there may be ways of making things a little easier for yourself!
