Equinox
The Vision
e.quinox is a non-profit, humanitarian project that hopes to bring cost-effective renewable energy to developing countries.
We strongly believe that technology can be a solution to many of the problems we face today. Our goals is give communities the means to help themselves.
The Reason
e.quinox aims to develop and implement a system to deliver cost-effective off-grid stand alone photovoltaic system to power rural villages in the developing world. We consider electric power a fundamental element to ensure an acceptable quality of life. There are countless benefits of introducing electrical power to small communities in the developing world. Electrical power has the potential to improve health (light, fridges etc.), education (lighting in schools, computers etc.) and the economical situation (improvements irrigation and harvest techniques). The increased price of natural resources has resulted in the increased price of electric power. To introduce a full national scale electric network in the developing world is not possible due to socioeconomical reasons.
The Organisation
e.quinox is a student's initiative at Imperial College London that encourages young people of a wide range of disciplines to bridge the gap between the classroom and real-world problems. The core development of our Project is lead by team of electrical engineering students in their third year. It is their responsibility to design and put together a solar power supply system to run appliances benefiting the community, such as water pumps and lighting systems for homes, schools and hospitals. Additionally other groups offer invaluable contributions to the project, ranging from important administrative support to expertise in other engineering disciplines. In fact we have an entire division of engineers in charge of designing support structures for the electrical equipment, surveying possible primary sites and leading the research into future alternatives for solar power.
