Imperial College Chess Club is a vibrant society that caters for players of all abilities. This applies equally to a complete novice seeking to improve their technical ability, or an accomplished graded player in search of some formal competition.
Regular club nights are held weekly in the East Basement of Beit Quadrangle, and form the basis of our activities.
The club participates in three competitive leagues throughout the academic year: the Central London League, Middlesex League and London League. Each of these will involve at least one team representing the College. Last year, the club experienced a dramatic intake of ability, and we hope this year will prove to be similarly productive. Our three team captains will therefore be scouting for new talent in the first term, and more than happy to answer any queries you may have.
A range of one-off events is also organized, including a team rapid-play tournament. A simultaneous display is held annually by Dr Jonathan Mestel, Imperial’s resident Grandmaster. One of Britain’s leading players during the 1970s and 80s, he encountered many of the world’s most distinguished figures, including Spassky, Tal and Karpov.
In short, the University Chess Club is entering an exciting new phase of development, and we hope you’ll be inspired to get involved.
