We've had a Redesign
Thursday 13 Sep 2007

Newdesignhome

Not content with being the most visited and feature packed Students' Union website in the UK, we are adding even more functionality for the new academic year!

The first part of our update is a redesign of the site. We have done this redesign in response to some comments from our members and also to keep the site looking fresh. The redesign adds a bold image to the homepage that will help us highlight something easily. We are also offering the option for you to share any of the pages of the website on Facebook, so if there is an event that you are planning on attending, why not share it on your Facebook page?

RSS feeds were one of the requests we received a lot, so we have added both a news and an events feed. Don't know what RSS is? Well have a look at our RSS information page for all the answers.

For the governance fans amongst you we have added a fully featured Meetings and Policies section of the site. The meetings section will have a list of all upcoming meetings for all our committees and over the next few weeks we will populate it with all our archived meetings from previous years. The policies section is a one-stop page with all our Union Policies on. You can list them by name or by their expiry date.

Over the next few weeks we will also be launching new functionality for our Clubs & Societies. These include a fully-featured Activity Registration application, plus a special Club & Society Admin Page. This will allow Club & Society administrators to add their own online products, monitor the sales, check live membership statistics and contact all their members in an easy form.

So keep checking back for more information!

No help anywhere about how to edit club pages. Can't seem to be able find what "Other Objects" is.

Hurrah, a club admin page is just what I - and a lot of us - have been waiting for. Soon I'll be able to ditch the Union's Mailman service, which is nearly as old as I am.

As far as the new look is concerned, I think the header leaves a lot to be desired, as the way the advert cuts in above the logo block is rather nasty. The old design was better in that respect, as the blue continued all the way to the top of the page.

As an example of what you could do with the header, see this image I made in about 10 minutes - http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/5027/unionheaderdg4.png

The RSS links should link to "/news.xml" and "/events.xml" - currently they 404 if you try and access them from anywhere but the home page. They should also be put in the <head> tag so that browsers can pick up on them and alert the user:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="/eventsxml" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="/news.xml" />

@ Ooble: I hope someone reads these comments >_>

Hi, yes we do read your comments and we appreciate them too. Any other feedback is very welcome.

The design for the header was carefully considered and we felt that the separation of the advert from the blue bar lightened up the page considerably and helped add to our new, more fresh, feel to the site.

We are looking to make a few tweaks to the design around the site in the next few weeks.
