Make the Library cool!
Monday 19 Mar 2007

Central Library The Library on a lovely sunny, hot day...

The library is currently in the middle of a complete refurbishment, designed to drag the building into the 21st century. This involves creating new learning space which facilitates group study far more than at present and, perhaps more importantly, improving the ventilation to try and stop temperatures soaring during the summer.

Anybody who has endured exam season at Imperial will instantly welcome these changes, indeed - you might think that you would be hard pressed to find anybody who objected. However local residents have raised objections to some parts of the design which could delay the whole scheme. This follows the rejection an earlier proposal, which included solar shading to help reduce the temperatures on level 3 and 4 even more, after locals complained that the shading appeared too dense?

What can I do about this?

Funny you should ask... If you want to ensure that the application is approved you can start by writing to the Planning Department at the City of Westminster. You can do this online (Westminster Planning Applications), or in writing - a model letter supporting the application can be downloaded below. The planning reference you will need to quote is: 06/07432/FULL.
If you live within the City of Westminster you might also consider writing to your local councillor. This is especially useful if you live within the ward of Knightsbridge and Belgravia (this includes Beit Hall and Princes Gardens).
