Despite playing absolutely no part in the musical careers of literally hundreds of worthy musicians (such as Beethoven, Frank Sinatra and Britney Spears), the ICSM Music Society constantly produces top notch performers and entertainers. Current members, under almost no duress at all, describe Music Society as "the best thing ever, even better than sliced bread." The orchestra, choir and jazz band form the backbone of the society, with weekly rehearsals culminating in high standard concerts at various local churches, pubs, prisons, and mental institutions (well, to be honest, it's mostly churches). In addition, there are various smaller ensembles, such as the high-quality Chamber Choir and other bands. We have two music rooms with equipment for bands to rehearse at the medical campuses, as well as pianos for personal practice. Musicians of all standards are welcome, medics and non-medics, and, with the exception of chamber choir, there is no need to audition.
Next summer, we are going on a week-long tour to Lithuania, and in the autumn term, we will go on a weekend away to escape London, with much socialising and the occasional rehearsal. Recently launched is our ICSM Music Scholarship for one fresher every year to have free lessons at the Royal College of Music and within the first few weeks of term there is the opportunity to sing in the Royal Albert Hall. Come along, and you'll see why we are the largest society in the medical school!
Do have a look through the website for more information about us, or alternatively drop Lydia, the chairman an e-mail.
Orchestra, is not only the most fun orchestra at Imperial (probably the world), with plenty of socials, weekends away, and post-rehearsal drinkies; we also find time to play some top notch music ranging from Mozart to John Williams. We rehearse Tuesday evenings from 7pm in the Reynolds Music Room.
Choir rehearses on Monday evenings from 7.30pm in the Drewe Lecture Theatre. We sing a wide variety of music ranging from well-loved classical pieces (Mozart et. al) to Broadway favourites. There’s no need to audition and we welcome singers of all abilities with plenty of solo opportunities for the more confident musicians!
The chamber choir is our smaller choir and is auditioned (but please don’t let this put you off giving it a try!) It is a four part choir and performs a wide range of music. There are plans afoot, including Bohemian Rhapsody, Ave Verum and possibly even some Disney Classics. We rehearse before main choir at 6.30pm.
Jazz Band meets every Sunday evening, from 7.30pm in the Reynolds Music Room. This, of course, allows easy access to the bar for post- (or even pre- and during-) rehearsal drinks! Having only been formed in January 2009 we have since played lots of gigs in a very short space of time, and hope to be even bigger and better this year.
Looking to play in a band? Need a place to practice? Music Society has a ‘Music Room’ in the basement of the Reynolds with an installed PA system, microphones, full drum kit, bass amp and pianos (upright and electric). |
