College to scrap RCSU, CGSU and ICSMSU

Apparently college are being generally rubbish and choosing to abolish all the historic names of the Faculty Union. So all you lucky engineers are now members of ICFoESA.

Catchy eh?

very disappointing, my flatmate was editor of broadsheet for a while and it was still a RCSU publication, and that was as recent as 2000/1 (well relatively recent)

College may change the faculty names, but they can't change the union names; that's like college renaming the acc, it's just an umbrella for a group of c+s

Unfortunately they can [and could rename even the acc]! The only thing they can't change is the name 'Imperial College Union' unles they get the Charter changed.

Buried in the College Statutes is this: -

"11 4) Where the Council disapproves of all or any part of the Imperial College Union's proposed constitution and the Union does not alter that proposed constitution in accordance with the Council's requirements within three months from the date on which the Union is requested to do so in writing by the Council, the Council shall make such amendments to the proposed constitution as it thinks fit and the proposed constitution as so amended shall then be the Union's constitution."

This has been upheld to be valid in the Courts - the President removed the Felix Editor-elect from office becuase of a lack of good academic standing; the editor elect sued the President claiming that the need of good academic standing was not in the constitution.

The Court held that because College had told us to change the constitution on this point (even though we hadn't at the time of the removal) - the College's version stood.
