Nice site and all, I like the design... but 40k to make? (according to Felix) How on earth can it have cost that much, when you could probably buy a simple template for a few hundred quid? I appreciate it's interactive and all, but couldn't you just employ a few keen computing students (I hear they're quite a talented bunch here) to knock it out for a 10th of the cost?

I like that having left college a year ago I can still register and login with my old ict login.
I think 40k is reasonable for a site of this standard. Look at the quality of the markup. That's hard to get from any open source cms.
The quality of the graphics and the templates are great at the moment too.
What will be the test of it's success is whether the site continues to look good when the users (union officers etc) are the one's inputting the majority of the content and making the new graphics, as opposed to the preloaded stuff set up by the contractor.
Interesting to see it hosted off campus and under a different domain name. Wonder what Google will make of that...?

1) What makes you think it's off campus?
2) It's under a different domainname because moving www.union.ic.ac.uk would cause no end of problems to Club websites.

the site is well worth it, the functionality has gone for somewhere around zero to a vital C&S tool.

I'm impressed by the new site although I would like to think that with enough modification an Open source CMS could also produce a similar markup.

Hi, Thanks for your comment, we understand your feelings about the cost of producing the website and would like to respond with some of the reasons behind our decision to use a professional web developer.
Although we have some very talented Computing Students who could have assisted us in development of our new website, the problem we would have faced would have been in working to a strict specification and on time. Also a lot of the other systems we have had developed by students in the past have suffered when the student has left. With the web development company we have used, we can work on a long term web strategy with the same people always being involved.
Finally as others have said - the CMS that we have purchased along with the eCommerce system, is second to none and offers us the ability to do some really clever things whilst also not making it too complicated. This is essential for us as we want users of all technical knowledge to contribute. We did see a number of companies, all at different prices, before realising that this choice was the best overall.
Please feel free to contact us for more info.

@sam
I was clearly wrong about it being off campus:
Domain Type Class TTL Answer imperialcollegeunion.org. A IN 86400 155.198.74.62
It was just something that I had read in the original Other Media proposal.
@Flick - if you start to modify an open source cms then the problem arises of mainting the core code base, which usually has security issues. With a commerical system, such as this one, you have the reassurance that the supplier will maintain the system.

I think it's pretty good. While I initially thought 40k seemed a bit steep, I've been using it for a bit now and I've noticed that the backend is indeed quite impressive, and the actual markup is quite future-proof. It uses efficient HTML and doesn't use tables for layout, and uses CSS for everything. In fact, the code is almost valid, which for something of this size is quite good.
