So, not a single one of the 300+ Clubs, Societies & Projects of Imperial College Union are able to accommodate what you want to do. If you are keen and willing to take on some responsibility, it is possible to start your own.
Before You Start - Important!
You must be a registered full time Imperial student to start a Club, Society or Project.
Double-check your activity is currently unavailable. E-mail the Deputy President (Clubs & Societies) and they will be able to tell you if what you want is already on offer. If at any time while you're attempting to start your new society you feel you need some help then email the Deputy President (Clubs & Societies) and they'll always be happy to offer advice and assistance.
Starting out
First of all you need to decide whether your idea fits better in the Clubs & Societies group or the Projects group. A Club or Society provides activities to your fellow students as its main aim- this could be in the form of learning a new skill, organising social activities or playing sports, for instance. A Project has a charitable aspect as its main aim. This could be volunteering within the local community or globally, with fundraising also included in the aims. Once you've identified the type of group you can then fill out the correct form. If you are unsure please ask the Deputy President (Clubs & Societies).
If you have spotted a potentially popular gap in the market for Clubs & Societies, you need to complete
this form (116 KB) and email it to the Deputy President (Clubs & Societies). Hopefully you'll know what you want to do and what the point is, so this should be fairly straight forward, though detailed with regards to your aims and objectives and how you would go about achieving them. There are also some other questions, to make sure you've thought about how it will all work. Finally, you need to find at least 20 other Imperial students who are interested. In any of these categories, don't feel restricted by the length of the page or the size of the box.
If it's a Project you're after, you need to fill out
this form (117 KB) and email it to the Deputy President (Clubs & Societies). It's very similar to the Clubs & Societies form, the main difference being that projects only require at least 5 other Imperial students who are interested.
New Clubs Committee & New Projects Committee
Once everything is ready you will be asked to come to the New Clubs or Projects Committee to present your idea. If you convince them that what you want to do is worthwhile and that you've thought everything through then your society will be officially created and the committee may give you some money to help you get off the ground. The committees generally meet once a month during term time.
What Happens Next
After your club has been created it will be put into a group with other similar clubs called a Clubs and Societies Committee (CSC). You will also be introduced to your CSC Chair who will help you to learn more of what you need to do in running the club.
Appealing the Decision
If the committee chose not to form your club, don't worry; you can appeal to the Clubs and Societies Board. Email the Deputy President (Clubs & Societies) and explain why you wish to appeal and they will guide you through the process.
