Shorinji Kempo

acc kempoShorinji Kempo was founded in postwar Japan. It encompasses striking techniques like Karate but emphasises quick accurate strikes to pressure points. Similar to Jiu Jitsu and Aikido it includes grabs, releases, pins and throws.

The aim of Shorinji Kempo is to develop people through the teaching of self-defence, Zen Buddhist philosophy, zazen meditation and seiho (acupressure massage). Techniques are designed to quickly incapacitate opponents whilst inflicting minimal damage. Training emphasises cooperation between partners. Kempo is non competitive; it is not a sport. It is self-defence and is free from the bias that sports martial arts suffer from.
