Our world is diverse, both naturally and ideologically. It is filled with a variety of people from differing backgrounds sharing a range of opinions and beliefs. However our differences, rather than acting as a great source of human inspiration, have the tendency to result in various acts of disunity and error of thought. Generations and generations of humans have allowed such errors in judgement to create a history of bloodshed, grave injustices and a world that impinges on basic human rights. Millions of people across the globe face execution, imprisonment, torture, violence and discrimination because of their differences.
If humans truly harbour logic and reason, why do we still disagree in our understandings of human rights? Why do we still judge people unjustly? Why have so many generations faced discrimination and abuse?
ICU One World Week identifies and explores one main area within these intriguing questions; why do we tend to rely on supposition, rather than certainty, in our judgements? Basing our opinions on conjecture and on uncertified facts can precipitate into a spiral of unworthy judgements and thoughts, which inevitably lead to unjust acts against our human brethren based upon their appearances and beliefs.
If we can suggest and explore the answers to these questions we will take a step closer to forming strategies that will solve our disunited and abused world.
As students who are part of this free thinking institute, success will be achieved once we provide the platform to combat the humanitarian issues mentioned below as a collective unit over the next week. All the events mentioned will hopefully raise awareness of the real facts of gender equality, sexual orientation, religion, disability and race. This will allow us to remove our baseless suppositions and fear less what we will come to know more.
